Learn NLP Calibration with 4 best exercises to practice today

NLP calibration is the ability to read unconscious and non-verbal cues of anyone.

NLP calibration technique can help you understand the behavioral cues linking to internal responses and emotional responses.

Calibration in NLP is the most basic and required skill to master.

This post will see the NLP calibration technique, six modalities of calibration NLP, and NLP calibration exercise.

What are the six modalities of calibration NLP?

Here is the list of six modalities of calibration NLP. You can select any one of them and master it. You can use any of the calibration exercises mentioned in the post.

  1. Eye accessing cues
  2. Breathing pattern
  3. Facial color
  4. Lower lip movement
  5. Voice, tone, and volume
  6. Muscle tension.

NLP calibration exercises

NLP calibration is subtle and happens quickly; I am listing out the process that can be practiced with a known person.

NLP calibration exercise of guessing

Step 1 – Understanding

Ask your partner to think of some concept or event they believe they understand or know completely.

Step 2 – Observe

Observe the physiology of your partner; observe everything like eye movements, posture, gesture, any other body movement.

Step 3 – Confusion

Now ask your partner to think about something that is unclear or confusing for them. Ideally, select exactly opposite from step 1.

Step 4 – Observe

Notice the physiology of your partner again, including eye movement, posture, gesture, etc.,

Observe carefully, and you may notice some changes in eye movement, breathing, posture, and gesture.

Step 5 – Pick the random concept.

Now ask your partner to pick a random concept. It can be confusion or understanding. Once selected, ask your partner to think of it again without telling you.

Step 6 – Observe

Now observe the physiology of your partner, eye movement, posture, gesture, breathing, etc.,

Try matching it with earlier experience. Can you tell whether they are thinking about a confusing concept or understanding a concept?

The NLP calibration technique mentioned here is a small exercise that you can do to strengthen your calibration skills.

Reading NLP techniques is fun and practicing them is even more fun, but we need NLP scripts while applying these NLP techniques.

I have created a small book of NLP scripts of the 7 most used NLP techniques. You can use them in your practice for only $10. You can buy the book from here.  Buy NLP scripts

NLP Calibration exercise with Pencil

These NLP calibration exercises to be done in a group of two.

  1. A holds the pencil like it is about to fall from his hand.
  2. B takes the position just two inches away from the pencil to prevent the fall.
  3. The task for person B is to look for cues from A that he is about to drop the pencil.
  4. The task for person A is to look for cues from B that he is ready or alert enough to catch the pencil.

In this pencil drop calibration exercise with pencil, you can observe visual cures, specifically eyes, to succeed.

NLP calibration exercises with a pencil may seem childish, though they are but believe me, these exercises work.

NLP calibration exercises with Coin

The most straightforward NLP calibration exercises is the coin guess.

  1. Person A takes the coin and place it in either right or left hand and brings out hands in front of him for B to guess.
  2. B observes the movement and judges which hand A is holding has the coin.

In this simple exercise, you can observe the physiology to succeed.

I have observed tension in muscles in the hand which holds the coin. Some people are smart enough to fool us by creating tension in the wrong hand.

I have also observed the change in breathing pattern changes with the change of hand.

NLP calibration exercises with Non-verbal responses

  1. Person A asks questions to Person B, which can be answered in either Yes or No.
  2. While person B is giving the answers, Person A observes the physiology and makes a note of calibration.
  3. Now Person A asks questions to Person B, but this time B only thinks of the answer in his mind.
  4. The task for Person A is to recognize when Person B is saying Yes or saying NO.
  5. Check the answers and take turns.

This NLP calibration exercise will clearly help you to understand the linkage between physiological changes and internal responses. Mind and body are connected.

Why learning NLP calibration is essential?

It is essential to understand how people experience the world around them and what are their preferred representation systems?

Calibration will help NLP practitioners to identify subtle changes that happen during the conversation.

An NLP practitioner should be discerning changes in the subject’s physiology, tone of voice, and breathing that may indicate a change in their internal responses.
